Media & Communications
- focus film
I have now completed my university studies at Örebro University. I have enjoyed the program a lot as it was very broad in information for both practical and theoretical parts. What it hasn't done is to allow me to find my calling within film, what do I want to do? Thats what I want to figure out now.

Below is the information about this 3 year course, the information is taken from their website and translated into English. Read the Swedish version here.
Within the Film Program you will have the opportunity to combine theoretical studies in movies with practical courses in video production. The first year of the program explores the film story through analysis and historical backlashes. Using different methods, on your own and in groups, you study the film's terms of production, viewing and reception in different times and cultural contexts. One of the courses is devoted to documentaries, where you make a film with other students.
The first year of study is the basic course and the advanced course in media and communication science with a focus on film. It essentially involves theoretical studies: watching movies, reading about movies, writing and discussing. The recommended study program for the Film Program means that during your second year of study you will read the practical / aesthetic course Short film with visual effects and sound design and then the Order Film course. An alternative is that you choose the courses you want to go depending on your interests and career choices. You will then choose freely from the university's course offerings.
Third year, you will graduate in Media and Communication Studies with a focus on film. In addition, there is the opportunity to do a internship, study abroad or read any courses from the university's courses.
A more detailed explanation...
Two things are crucial for the film program's unique profile at Örebro University. The first is that students in the program are given the opportunity to combine theoretical studies on films with studies in video production. The second is that the main subject of the degree is Media and Communication Science and not Film Science.
An education that leads to a university degree must always contain a theoretical so-called main field. The main subject of the degree is Media and Communication Studies, which means that the studies on the theoretical courses are about movies as fun and artistic expression, but also films in relation to other media and cultural forms. You can analyze modern Hollywood movies, but you may also consider the role of the film in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and how the movie medium and media habits changed when television, video and internet came. A fairly large proportion of the studies in the main subject make a downturn in film and media history to discover and understand the varied richness of film history and the changing societal features of media cultures.
The practical courses of the second year of the recommended course of study focus on 'story telling' for moving picture. In the autumn semester, you will get to know the digital tools needed to tell you about moving pictures on the web. You get basic skills in making short film for video, creating visual effects, audio design for video and editing. In the spring you will develop your ability to write ideas to short film music on demand. It can be about informing, instructing, training, convincing, selling or maintaining. The point is that you learn to work on assignments and with others, you learn film techniques, and how to develop an idea to complete script under conditional forms. A large part of the manuscript is devoted to a project work when a script is completed as a short film. In that part, your combined experience from the courses you have been in the program will be useful!
The film program's profile corresponds to current trends in the labor market. Those who have a combination of humanities and technical skills in their bachelor's degree are expected to gain an advantage in the competition for work. The film program offers such an advantage. Social scientists predict a brighter future than humanists in the labor market. The combination of humanistic and social science studies is therefore recommended. That's exactly what the Film Program offers.
